Missed a dose: what to do next

Quick answer

Do not take a double dose to “catch up.” For weekly injections, timing rules differ by product and how many days late you are. For daily tablets, the next scheduled dose is usually the safer path unless your clinician has told you otherwise.

When in doubt, contact your prescribing clinician before improvising. This article is educational and does not replace the product information or individual medical advice.

Why a missed dose needs a plan

GLP-1 medicines are timed so blood levels stay in a range your body can tolerate. Skipping and then stacking doses can raise side-effect risk without improving results.

Weekly injections and daily tablets follow different catch-up rules. The right move depends on which product you use and how late you are — not on how “behind” you feel.

If you use a weekly injection

Many weekly products allow taking a missed dose within a limited window (often measured in days), then continuing the usual weekly schedule from that new day — or skipping and waiting for the next planned day if you are too late. Exact windows differ between products.

Never inject twice in a short interval to make up for a miss. If nausea or other side effects were already strong on your current dose, ask before shifting the schedule.

If you use a daily tablet

Daily tablets usually have strict timing and fasting rules. A missed morning dose is often skipped; taking it late can conflict with food timing and reduce absorption.

Do not take two tablets on the same day unless your clinician has explicitly instructed that for your product.

Do and don’t after a miss

Keep this checklist nearby until the habit is solid.

  • Do note the date and time of the miss in your treatment log
  • Do check your product’s patient leaflet for the specific catch-up window
  • Do contact your clinician if you are unsure or feel unwell
  • Don’t double up to compensate
  • Don’t change the dose yourself because you “fell behind”
  • Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or signs of an allergic reaction
